About

The Great Los Angeles Ice Cream Party began humbly in 1997 as a way for young people to get together in a unique social setting. Over a decade later, it has grown into one of the largest ice cream socials in the city. In the fourth year, the event started raising funds for causes - just a few dollars that teenagers could raise by donating a dollar or two. As the years past, the event became larger and more organized. By year 7, we were raising over a thousand dollars, and it was still geared to a young person who could donate a few dollars.

Over the years, the Great Los Angeles Ice Cream Party hasn’t raised millions of dollars, but we’ve allowed hundreds of young people the opportunity to gather to do something good for the community. We’ve supported youth programs, historical programs, and educational programs across Los Angeles, and the venues have varied from backyards and school halls to historic sites and museums. The Great Los Angeles Ice Cream Party isn’t a production that costs thousands of dollars to put on; it’s an event that takes something everyone loves - ice cream - and allows good works to come of such a gathering.

Why an Ice Cream Party?

So, why does the Great Los Angeles Ice Cream Party exist today in its current form?

Young people from ages 13 to 30 are often encouraged to get involved, but there is rarely an opportunity for them to have the experience of donating their money to a cause. Often fundraising events are too expensive for them to attend or fundraising activities such as silent auctions price the young person out of participating. The Great Los Angeles Ice Cream Party provides an opportunity for young people (and older people, too!) to donate funds and participate at a moderate level. For a donation of 10 or 20 dollars, a person can fully partake in the event, as no donation is required to have some ice cream and take part in the activities. This is an event that is geared to ALL AGES from families to young adults to senior citizens.

And besides, who doesn’t love ice cream?

About the Location
Located between the LA Zoo and the Los Feliz park entrance, the Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round was in 1926 and brought to Griffith Park in 1937. It has 68 horses, that are each caved with fine detail. The organ is one of the largest in the world and can be head through out the area. It has been said that this merry-go-round was the inspiration for Disneyland: Walt brought his children here, thought of a place where parents and children could both enjoy the attractions.

Cost/Fundraising
The Great Los Angeles Ice Cream Party is free - there is no cost to attend and enjoy ice cream sundaes. Everyone who attends will be entered into a door prize opportunity drawing just by attending as well as a free ride on the merry-go-round.

The beneficiary of any donations collected this year is LA Commons, a non-profit working to build communities and cultural awareness of LA's neighborhoods."LA Commons builds community by validating the importance of local narratives, enhancing the sense of belonging felt by a broad range of stakeholders and encouraging stronger ties between the people and places of Los Angeles."
